Bare Bottles: Products I’ve Finished No. 5

Hooray! The weather in New York is finally getting warmer. Warmer weather for me means less products to use but definitely more sun protection since we’re showing a little bit more skin. Here is this week’s Bare Bottles post.
This lotion was just okay for me. I would apply it after my shower, and although it felt moisturizing, the moisture was not long-lasting. However I do love the size of this bottle — it can last for months! Another thing I love about this lotion is that it is fragrance free. I sometimes dislike wearing  lotions with a fragrance because they can badly mix with my perfume. But if I had to choose another Aveeno lotion I would pick this one. I’m not sure what is the exact difference between the two, but for some reason I like the Daily Moisturizing one much better.

To make a long story short I had previously bought this face moisturizer but for combination/oily skin and it gave my skin a burning sensation. I exchanged it for this sensitive version and it worked great. It is rare that I get a reaction to a product so my guess is that the sunscreen ingredients were to blame for the burning feeling. I’m not sure which ingredient it was but from now on I stick to zinc oxide (a gentler form of sunscreen) just to be sure. I’m not sure if I’ll buy this moisturizer again. I’m currently eyeing this one from Honest Beauty, which has only zinc oxide and a higher SPF.

5 Rules to Follow to Get Better Skin

Nothing feels better than having a great skin day – that and a good shopping spree. Having glowing blemish-free skin is easier to have than you might think. I know we all have those days when we are just not feeling our best. We are humans nonetheless. But if you’re suffering from breakouts or feel that your skin needs a boost then count on the easy simple rules below. I follow these rules religiously and I know you probably heard them again and again but there’s a reason for that: they truly work. Try one or two or all of them and notice the difference.

Rules to follow:
1. Drink More Water: Do you think you drink enough water throughout the day? Think again. Water is incredibly important for our bodies. We need to stay hydrated constantly. Start your morning with a glass of water and continue to drink water throughout the day. Skip soft drinks and juices which can be loaded with way too much sugar. Upping your water intake guarantees more hydrated skin. This rule is beneficial for those who suffer from dry skin. 
2. Wear Sunscreen: As much as some of us dislike applying sunscreen it is crucial to do so. Always wear sunscreen before stepping outside. Look for a moisturizer/BB cream that already has SPF. Remember that you must still protect your skin even when it is a cloudy day. You’re supposed to wear sunscreen year-round to prevent sun/dark spots, wrinkles and ultimately skin cancer.
What I Use: My current moisturizer is Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer Sensitive Skin SPF 15.
3. Cleanse Before Sleeping: Nothing hurts skin the most than the sun and falling asleep without washing your face. Use a face wash or cleansing oil along with a cotton round to remove all of your makeup from the day. It just sounds completely icky to not clean your face before hitting your sheets. I’m super crazy about this one! Plus you don’t want makeup to transfer to your pillow or to wake up looking like a hot mess with makeup residue smeared all over your face. Trust me your skin will thank you for it.
What I Use: To remove makeup and cleanse my face I rely on L’occitane Shea Cleansing Oil.

4. Indulge in a Face Mask: Once a week treat yourself to a face mask targeted towards your skin type or a skin problem you might have. For example I have oily skin so I use a face mask every Sunday (Sundays are my “me” days) that helps combat oil and leaves my face with a matte finish. So whether you have oily, dry, or sensitive skin or you are looking to minimize pores, or add more moisture, search for a mask that will help you with your specific need.
What I Use: Once a week I apply Sephora Collection Purifying and Mattifying Mud Mask and leave it on for 20 minutes.

5. Get Enough Sleep: Okay this rule is so hard for me to follow especially when I’m binge watching a new show. Try your best to get about 7 to 9 hours of sleep everyday. My schedule, like a lot of other people’s schedule, might vary day to day so I can be waking up super early one day and a little later another day. However I try to get enough sleep as much as I can. Sleeping not only relaxes your body and gets it ready to conquer the next day but it also prevents unflattering dark puffy circles underneath your eyes and renews your skin.

I really hope you follow these rules and notice a positive change in your skin. Let’s not forget that a healthy diet and regular exercise are also incredibly beneficial to your skin. But applying the above rules to your lifestyle can absolutely make a difference in how your skin looks.

Bare Bottles: Products I’ve Finished No. 1

Today I bring to you a new kind of post. I am showing you beauty products that I’ve recently finished. Lucky‘s editor-in-chief Eva Chen does similar posts like this on her Instagram. I think it’s a neat idea and decided to do a post like this for the blog.

Every time I finish a product I immediately toss it out but this time I kept each one that I finished so I can share them with you. Below is the list of the products and a brief review of each of them.

Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer
I first mentioned this moisturizer back in September. You can see the post here. I just finished the 1.7 oz jar. Like I mentioned in the older post, this moisturizer is hydrating and it has a great smell. A little goes a long way with this product. I’m always changing moisturizers so now since I’m done with this one I will be trying out a different one. This lasted me almost 5 months.

L’occitane Shea Butter Lip Balm Stick
This lip balm works really well. Something cool about it is that once you put it on you can touch your lips an hour later and still feel the balm on your lips. It’s definitely long-lasting. The consistency is really good too. It’s very moist (I don’t really like that word but it describes it perfectly). And the smell is delicate but neutral. One downside is that the stick doesn’t last very long.

MAC Oil Control Lotion
This lotion is an essential for me especially during the warmer months. During the summer makeup can easily melt off your face and you can look shiny and greasy. This lotion helps with oiliness and I even sometimes use it instead of my moisturizer and just go from there.

Honest Face + Body Lotion
I love everything about Honest products. I love how natural and healthy they are. This lotion in particular was good but it didn’t blow me away. The smell is very natural – it has almost like a plant smell. You have to get used to it. Also the lotion works well on the skin but it is very lightweight. If you’re suffering from really dry skin you won’t find a solution with this lotion.

Josie Maran Pure Argan Oil
This oil is a cult favorite of mine. I always replenish it every time I run out. I love that this oil is 100% natural and can be used for almost anything. I prefer to use it on my face or on occasional eczema breakouts. I like to add a few drops of this oil to my tinted moisturizer to have a smoother application. At nighttime I like to apply this to my face after cleansing. I usually buy the travel size version and it lasts a while.

Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant in Pure Vanilla
This deodorant is all natural meaning it’s free of toxic chemicals like aluminum and triclosan. I’ve used this deodorant before and reviewed it for Lovelyish. You can see the post here. At the time I felt just okay with it but I recently decided to give it another try. At first it is not long-lasting but there’s a good reason for that. It turns out that natural deodorants hardly ever work because people need to detox their bodies from anti-perspirants first and then the deodorant will last longer. I will soon write an anti-perspirant detox post detailing my experience.

Olay Fresh Effects: Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer

As someone whose skin is always changing it is hard to find a good moisturizer. In the summer my skin can be oily but in the winter it can get dry. I read on Teen Vogue that gel moisturizers can be great for oily skin and they recommended Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer.

This gel moisturizer comes in a super handy jar but surprisingly the gel doesn’t feel like gel, but instead a very soft lotion. After cleansing I applied this all over my face and neck. The gel dries quickly therefore letting you apply makeup right after. My skin felt smooth and hydrated afterwards.

I do suggest applying a small amount. The first time I applied it to my face I added too much and my skin felt greasy, so a little goes a long way with this product. However, after learning to apply the perfect amount, my skin did feel less oily and even brighter. This is great for dull skin that needs a little pick me up. With its subtle honeysuckle and white tea scent, it will give you a cooling sensation that instantly wakes you up and makes you feel refreshed.
